  • Reevaluating The Frame

    Level: Beginner/Intermediate

    Students will consider the ways in which the frame can be a constraint and a guide. Participants will learn how to work within the frame to create movement, confusion, and play. To reevaluate the frame means to reevaluate way that images can be made. This class is a great way to begin considering or reconsidering how the frame impacts the way you deal with space. Students will become stronger at subject placement and how that informs the viewers experience of their images. This course includes class critiques, assigned readings and a final project in which students will show their unique understanding of the frame and their use of it.

    Dates: January 7 – March 4th, 2021

    Meets: Thursdays from 4 – 6 PM (EST)

  • The Self Portrait as Exploration

    Level: Intermediate/Advanced

    During this course, participants will take their self portrait work to the next level. Through assigned readings, critiques and discussions students will learn how to enhance their understanding of the representation of the self and how it relates to their work. This course dives deeply into how self portraits can be used to discuss gender, the relationship between the subject and model, and performance. Participants will round out the course with a deeper understanding of the complexities of photographing oneself in a realized body of work that explores the self portrait in their own unique way.

    Course Length: 10 weeks / meeting twice a week for 3 hours per class

    Dates: Tuesdays January 5 – March 16th, 2021

  • Photography 101

    Level: Beginner

    Participants will learn about the basic techniques of the camera, photographic materials, processes, and the history and development of photography. With an emphasis on personal vision, participants will develop technological skills, understand basic photographic theory, personal aesthetics, and critical thinking about photography. As a shooting based course, participants will become proficient in using a DSLR camera (digital-single­ lens reflex) and/or any camera students have available. Participants will edit images in software editing programs, and critique their peers’ work weekly. Participants will walk away with a thoughtful, succinct photographic body of work that they will present along with a written artist statement.

    Dates: January 4 – March 1st, 2021
